Hey Friend,
I’m writing to you today from the front seat of my car, it’s 7:37 am and it looks like it’s going to be a clear sunny day in San Diego. I wanted to check in because I know how much “mental real estate” it takes just to exist right now.
But I also wanted to share something I’ve realized: Creativity never dies.
We’re often told that to be “creative,” we need a perfect setup. But I’m finding that the most beautiful rhythms are born in the thick of it all…
We are told that creativity needs a “room of one’s own”—a quiet studio, a desk with a view, a candle, and a clear mind.
But I’m finding that creativity doesn’t need a permit or a permanent address. In fact, sometimes creativity waits until you’re in the “thick of it” to truly show its face.
When you are navigating life from your car, or in a side walk or shelter your brain is forced into a different kind of survival. You have to be a master of logistics, a professional problem-solver, and a curator of your own peace. And somewhere in between the “where do I park?” “What will I eat” or even “how do I stay warm?”, a new kind of creative fire starts to burn.
It’s the creativity of the Alchemist.
It’s the ability to take a cramped space and turn it into a sanctuary. It’s the ability to take a situation that should feel like “less than” and turn it into a movement like Unhoused Not Defeated.
If you’re reading this and you feel like your circumstances have buried your talents, I’m here to tell you: Your creativity isn’t dead; it’s just being sharpened. The pressure isn’t breaking you; it’s carving out a version of your art that is more raw, more honest, and more powerful than anything you could have made when things were “easy.”
Today’s gentle nudge: Even if you only have five minutes of “mental real estate” today, write one sentence. Record one voice note. Draw one sketch. Don’t wait for the “perfect” environment. Your current environment is exactly where your most authentic work is born.
From one victor to another,
Peace, love and coconut oil
